Vancouver snow tire sales are hot this year

Vancouver snow tire sales are hot this year

Lower Mainland tire stores say Vancouver drivers are pre-ordering winter tires in record numbers.

Record snowfalls in December 2008 and January 2009 appear to be fresh in many car owners' memories.
"This year, everybody's thinking ahead," said Tom Irving, owner of a Fountain Tire franchise on Clark Drive in Vancouver
The region does not historically get snow every winter, so snow-clearing budgets are low and plows are scarce compared to the rest of Canada. Hundreds of side streets were not cleared for weeks last year.
"I've never in my history of selling tires seen so many people buy winter tires so early in the season."
Irving said his staff has filled a whole service bay with tires ordered by customers determined not to be caught unprepared."We always hear that in Vancouver you don't need winter tires," said Irving. "Last year was proof that you need winter tires."

Tires not mandatory, but a good idea

Snow tires are not mandatory in B.C. but authorities can require them on certain highways where conditions demand it.If you drive past posted signs saying snow tires or chains are required and don't have them installed, you can get hit with a $109 ticket.
If you're in an accident, ICBC says ignoring that posted sign can affect your claim settlement.

If the precipitation on the Metro Vancouver's north shore mountains are any indication, the Lower Mainland could be in for another snowy winter. The last week of rain has fallen as snow at higher elevations. Mount Seymour has had 134 centimetres of snow since Nov. 13, unusual for the time of year and a boon for those whose business depends on snow."This is our second earliest opening in the last dozen years and we're really excited. Conditions are great, the snow is packed in really nicely," said Mount Seymour's Jonathan Mosley, director of the mountain's ski and snowboard school.

Rolling Towards Greener Tires

   Rolling Towards Greener Tires

One of the ways that auto makers are trying to squeeze a few more miles per gallon into their vehicles are with improvements to tires. But tire makers have long been constrained by a principle that says any improvement to rolling resistance (the ability for tires to overcome the resistance they face as they roll over the road) would lead to lower tire durability and lower ability to grip the road in wet conditions.
Some companies are putting that principle to rest, or at least tweaking it a bit, by increasing rolling resistance along with bettering or not harming the other parts of what is called the “magic triangle of tire technology,” as detailed by Chemical & Engineering News.
Overcoming the resistance that tires encounter when they roll accounts for 20% of the fuel used in the average car, according to the French tire manufacturer Michelin. By itself, rolling resistance is responsible for a startling 4% of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels, Michelin says.
So auto makers have a clear incentive to push tire companies to come up with products that have better rolling resistance. Michelin developed a tire in 1992 that had a rolling resistance up to 30 percent less than other tires by switching out a material in tire treads.

Michelin's latest entrant in the greener tire market is its Energy Saver A/S, boasting 8 percent higher fuel efficiency than other tires like it as well as better performance when braking on wet roads.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber's Assurance Fuel Max tire claims to provide 4 percent better fuel efficiency than previous Assurance tires, but with the same wear and traction properties.

Lanxess, a rubber company, is delving into new territory with Nanoprene, a material made of nanomaterials and completely new to tire treads.

The company says Nanoprene improves the abrasion resistance, grip, and rolling resistance of tires, pushing out all three corners of the magic triangle simultaneously. Lanxess recently began commercial production of the material. Its first customer, Toyo Tire & Rubber, will use it in winter tires.
But in the end, all of the chemical and tire innovations can be moot if tires are not inflated properly, which is why Exxon-Mobil Chemical is creating materials that make tires hold air better.

Mother choice is a custom camaro with Nitto tires at SEMA

A customized 2010 Camaro equipped with Nitto tires, the Lingenfelter T/A, has won a Mothers Choice Award for excellence in automotive design at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas.
Sponsored by a provider of polishes, waxes and cleaners, Mothers Choice Award winners are judged by a panel of industry experts and presented to a standout SEMA entry in each of several categories.
Judging is based on overall appearance, attention to detail, integration of custom and stock elements, paint finish, creative vision and execution of concept. The Lingenfelter T/A’s wheels are custom 20-inch Honeycomb’s with bright brushed aluminum details. The Nitto tires are 275/40ZR20 fronts and 315/35ZR20 rears.

“We are very proud to receive a Mothers Choice Award for the design of our T/A concept car, which we built to turn the heads of muscle car enthusiasts as well as to demonstrate our team’s extensive knowledge of power and automotive technology,” says Ken Lingenfelter, owner of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering in Decatur, Ind.

The car has custom-molded body styling that emulates the muscle-heavy cars of the 1970s, he says. It features the engine specialist’s custom Racing Head Service (RHS) aluminum engine block with a 455 cubic-inch displacement.
It has 4.155-inch bore Diamond 11.5:1 compression ratio pistons and a 4.200-inch stroke Lunati forged crankshaft. Lingenfelter-brand CNC ported and polished LS7 heads and an LSX FAST 102 intake finish off the engine, which produces 655 horsepower and 610 foot-pounds of torque.
A Lingenfelter 6-bolt LS9 twin disk flywheel and clutch assembly and heavy-duty Driveshaft Shop halfshafts are also applied. Body enhancements include a new hood with a shaker scoop and blue keyed stripe. The front fascia “borrows from the vehicle’s inspired muscle car heritage” and incorporates custom head lamps, grille and turn signals for authentic detailing.
The car’s fender has a functional side extractor scoop and the rear quarter has a leading-edge wheel flair. The rear corners have been extended nearly four inches with a wrapped down stand-up spoiler, and customized taillight housings have been added to the package.
A custom-designed Corsa Performance stainless steel exhaust also graces the car, which is finished in an icy, bright white with an electric blue stripe running from front to rear. Bright blue woven vinyl seat inserts and metal-turned instrument panel accents highlight the interior.

Michelin adds to it's Retread line of tires

Michelin Retread Technologies expanded its retread offering for its X One super wide truck tires with the new Michelin X One XZU S precure tread.
The new tread is designed for application on refuse fleets and other urban, high-scrub or regional haul vehicles.

The X One XZU S tread is now available in a 390/430 tread size, and features a 23/32 tread depth, shoulder protector wings, and an application-specific, two-layer compound developed to minimize casing temperature for longer casing life

“The X One XZU S tire has become a very popular tire in the urban and regional applications, especially for refuse vehicles,” said Tom Brennan, vice president and director of MRT. “Fleets have seen the advantages of X One tires and can now take full advantage of the X One XZU S retread to further reduce their operating costs.”

Michelin Retread Technologies is expanding the retreadable offerings of its X One wide single truck tire line with the recent rollout of the X One XZU S Pre-Mold Retread.

“The X One XZU S tire has become a very popular tire in the urban and regional applications, especially for refuse vehicles,” says Tom Brennan, the line’s vice president and director. “Fleets have seen the advantages of X One tires and can now take full advantage of the X One XZU S retread to further reduce their operating costs.”

It is available as a Pre-Mold Retread in a 390/430 tread size.

Brennan says the tire provides a “long tread life and outstanding scrub resistance with 23/32 in original tread depth of an application-specific compound. The retread uses Michelin Co-EX technology — a two-layer compound designed to minimize casing temperature for longer casing life — and features a wing tread design for added protection on the shoulders.”

While the tread design is optimized for all-weather traction, according to Brennan, enhanced protection against stone drilling is also provided by variable pitch groove walls and groove bottom protectors. “When used in urban regional operations, Michelin X One wide single tires, featuring Infini-Coil Technology, provide optimized weight savings and significant fuel savings.”
